ViaSat Internet FAQ
How fast is Viasat Internet?
Internet speed is measured in Mbps, which stands for megabits per second. The speed you experience with Viasat will depend on where you live, but many of our customers experience 50-100 Mbps downstream. In other places, the speed will be in the 12-30 Mbps range. Upstream speed is 3 Mbps.
Can I have Wi-Fi in my home with my Viasat Internet service?
Yes, in most places, Viasat offers wireless connectivity! You have more than one option when it comes to wireless routers. Viasat can supply a brand-new Viasat Wi-Fi Modem or Gateway with built-in Wi-Fi, or you can provide your own router. Any modern router will work with Viasat Internet service. If you supply your own router, you will be responsible for connecting the router to the modem and setting up your wireless network.
How long does Viasat installation take?
Installation typically takes 2-3 hours. When you order our service, we’ll book an appointment with one of our certified professional technicians. The installer will arrive at your home with all the necessary equipment, including the Viasat satellite dish and modem. The installer will usually mount the mini-dish, which is about 30 inches wide x 28 inches high, on an outside wall or on the roof of your home. In some instances they may need to use a pole in the ground. Your internet service will be working when our technician leaves.
I’m handy--can I install my own dish?
Unfortunately, we cannot allow self-installs. Our technicians are highly trained specifically for Viasat’s technology. It’s imperative that the dish be properly pointed at our satellite and that all connections are properly made to ensure flawless service and top speeds.
How can I make sure my HOA will allow a Viasat dish?
The Viasat dish, like television satellite dishes and other similar devices, is governed by the FCC Over-the-Air Reception Devices Rule (FOTARD). FOTARD allows for all compliant residential dishes that provide services such as satellite television and internet service to be mounted on your home. We do advise that you verify your specific regulations with your landlord and/or HOA before booking your installation appointment.
Can I use Viasat’s service if I am a renter?
As long as you have prior approval from your landlord to install the Viasat dish, you can use our service. Please secure approval before your installation appointment, and please make sure an adult with decision-making authority is present at the time of install.
Does Viasat offer a warranty?
Viasat provides a 90 day warranty for the equipment. They also offer an upgraded level of support–EasyCare. For a low monthly price, EasyCare will cover all service calls and offers annual dish relocation and more. Sign up for EasyCare when you order Viasat, or add the service at any time by logging on to the Viasat Portal and accessing your account.
Does Viasat charge cancellation fees?
Yes, cancellation fees do exist with Viasat Internet service. The minimum service term is two years (24 months). If you disconnect service before the end of the service term, you may incur an early termination fee (ETF) of $15 for every month remaining on the contract. For instance, if you were to cancel service half way through your 24-month contract, you would pay $15 a month for the remaining 12 months of your agreement (12×15 = an ETF of $180).
Can I work remotely using Viasat’s service? My office uses a virtual private network (VPN).
If your VPN is SSL-based, it may work fine. Other types of VPNs may be slow or may not work at all with Viasat Internet service. If you are not sure what type of VPN you have, we recommend bringing your VPN-equipped laptop to a local retailer to test it out. If you are not near a retail location, gather as much information as you have about your VPN and call or email our customer service staff for help.
